On October 26, 2011, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with a visiting delegation headed by UN Under-Secretary-General Kasymzhomart Tokayev, who is also director-general of the UN office at Geneva.
Yang said the current international situation is undergoing profound and complex changes, and multi-polarization and economic globalization have developed profoundly. Faced with unsteady and uncertain factors, we should insist on multilateralism, strengthen the function of the UN and properly tackle global problems through enhanced international cooperation, he added. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the restoring of the legal seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN. "China will continue to maintain the authority and function of the UN and actively participate in the work of the UN and its office at Geneva in various fields, including politics, economy, social activities and development," Yang said. China is ready to further develop cooperative relations with the United Nations (UN), he added.
Tokayev spoke highly of the achievements China has made in its economic and social development, as well as China's important contributions to the UN over the past four decades. He also expressed expectation for China to play a bigger role on the multilateral stage, adding the UN office at Geneva is willing to enhance communication and cooperation with China.
Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
