On Oct. 20, 2011, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who was on an official visit to Denmark, had a phone conversation with Secretary-General Nabil Al Arabi of the League of Arab States on invitation. They exchanged views on the issue of Syria.

Foreign Minister Yang said that currently the concerned parties in Syria should give top priority to the interests of the people and the country, give up acts of violence, avoid bloodshed, and stabilize the situation of Syria through dialogues. The Syrian government should step up efforts to fulfill reform commitments and respond to the reasonable demands of the people. The opposition parties should talk with the government by peaceful means. China will continue to play its role in this regard. The Chinese side highly values the important role played by the League of Arab States in safeguarding regional peace and stability and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with the League of Arab States on this matter.

Secretary-General Nabil Al Arabi introduced the position of the League of Arab States on the issue of Syria and appreciated the positive role played by China.
