Chinese, Japanese and ROK Leaders Meet the Media Wen Jiabao Answers Question on Nuclear Issue of Korean Peninsula
——Wen hopes parties concerned seize opportunity to resume the six-party talks
2009/10/10

On October 10, 2009, Premier of the State Council of China Wen Jiabao met the media together with President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Myung-bak and Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama following the second China-Japan-ROK summit meeting. Wen answered journalist's question on the nuclear issue of Korean Peninsula.

Wen Jiabao said I held several talks with Chairman of National Defense Commission Kim Jong-il during my visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Those talks lasted altogether 10 hours, with the longest one lasting nearly 4 hours. The nuclear issue of Korean Peninsula was the focus of our talks. Related consensuses have been announced both by China and the DPRK. I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce more details and my own experience. Media's access to comprehensive and accurate information is conducive to creating a positive atmosphere and crucial to resuming and advancing the six-party talks.

My visit to the DPRK has achieved certain positive outcomes which are the result of joint efforts of China and the DPRK and all the parties concerned as well. The DPRK demonstrated flexibility on the issue of six-party talks, indicating that it does not oppose the six-party talks and is willing to resolve relevant issues through bilateral and multilateral dialogues so as to create conditions for restarting the talks. It hopes to improve relations with the US as well as Japan and ROK. This has impressed me most during my visit. Of course, to truly resume the six-party talks needs further constructive efforts from all relevant parties. Human effort can achieve anything and opportunities are fleeting. So long as we seize and make best use of opportunities, we will possibly be able to continue with positive progress. Otherwise, we will have to double our efforts in the future.

Originally there has existed the bilateral dialogue mechanism within the framework of six-party talks. We always welcome parties concerned to increase understanding and trust through bilateral dialogues which are key parts of the six-party talks. Therefore, we support the DPRK in carrying out serious and constructive dialogues with the US and in strengthening contacts and improving relations with Japan and ROK.

China has done a lot to promote the denuclearization of Korean Peninsula and resume the six-party talks. During this process, we have consistently abided by relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and fulfilled the obligations as a permanent member of the Security Council. We offered some assistance to the DPRK for the country to improve economic development and people's livelihood, which also complies with the spirit of Security Council resolutions. All the efforts the Chinese side has made aim at pushing forward the six-party talks, accelerating denuclearization of Korean Peninsula and maintaining lasting peace and stability in Northeast Asia. We are willing to continue to work relentlessly with all the other parties concerned in that direction.

Wen pointed out that the Chinese, Japanese and ROK leaders discussed carefully the situation of Northeast Asia and denuclearization of Korean Peninsula and reached important consensus during today's summit meeting. China, Japan and ROK are all Northeast Asian countries as well as participants of the six-party talks. To achieve lasting peace and stability in Northeast Asia and denuclearize Korean Peninsula are major concerns of all the three countries. During the summit meeting, the three parties agreed that relevant issues be solved peacefully through dialogue and consultation. We are willing to take constructive steps to resume the six-party talks as soon as possible and make positive contributions to the long-term stability in this region.
