Ambassador Zhang Jun Meets with Dutch collector Henk B. Nieuwenhuys

On 22 March, Ambassador Zhang Jun met with Dutch collector Henk B. Nieuwenhuys. Ambassador Zhang spoke highly of the generosity of Mr. Nieuwenhuys who donated ninety-seven pieces of his porcelain collection to the Shanghai Museum. The kind donation not only provided more people with opportunities to enjoy the beauty of porcelain fired in Ming and Qing dynasty, but also faciliated the in-depth study of the Jingdezhen porcelain history of the Ming and Qing periods and Sino-Europe exchanges in the fields of both economy and culture at that time. It also promoted cultural exchanges between the Netherlands and China. Ambassador Zhang said Sino-Dutch relationship maintains good momentum and cooperation in all areas are deepening nowadays. He firmly believes that, with supports of people of both countries, Sino-Dutch relationship would enjoy even brighter future.

 

The collection Mr. Nieuwenhuys donated has been formed through years of efforts of Mr. Nieuwenhuys' grandfather and father as well as himself. They are mainly blue and white porcelain fired in Jingdezhen from the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty to the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. Mr. Nieuwenhuys lives in Shanghai now and is actively promoting cooperation in wind energy between the two countries.
