Wang Yi: China Will Always Be a Member of Developing Countries
2013/09/27

On Sept. 26, 2013, Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 37th Foreign Ministers' Annual Meeting of the G77 at the UN headquarters in New York, and delivered a keynote speech.

About the current opportunities and challenges facing developing countries, Wang Yi said that developing countries have more opportunities than challenges, and the key is to strengthen the sense of opportunities and potential dangers, to give top priority to the economy, development and people's wellbeing, and to resolve challenges and seize opportunities through reform, opening-up, technological progress and collective self-reliance.

About the future of developing countries, Wang Yi said that strength and influence of the developing countries are no longer what they used to be, and we are participating in world affairs on an equal footing and working actively to build international systems. There might be problems of one kind or another among the developing countries, but common interests and positioning as developing country come first. Developing countries should be on guard against any attempt of sowing discord and dividing in order to rule. We must avoid the situation in which each fights the war on its own, and avoid undermining each other's positions. We must strengthen the sense of unity and coordination, and try to speak with one voice.

About the positioning of China as a developing country, Wang Yi pointed out that China is undoubtedly a developing country at the moment, even when China becomes stronger and more prosperous in the future, it will remain a staunch member of the developing countries, make developing countries as the foundation of Chinese diplomacy, and forever be a reliable friend and sincere partner of the developing countries.

About future cooperation between China and the G77, Wang Yi pointed out that the four words, namely, "sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith", brought up by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Africa, applies to China's relations with the G77 and all the other developing countries as well. China insists on the justice and benefit idea of justice outweighing benefits and interests being pursued only in the right way. China stands for common development and mutual benefits, and will never reap selfish benefits at the expense of others, or follow a beggar-thy-neighbor approach. China values the G77 and the G77+China mechanism, and hopes to strengthen communications and coordination within the UN framework.

The G77 is a coordination mechanism of developing countries in the field of international economy, was established in 1964, and now has 133 member states. China has been coordinating and operating with the G77 through the G77+China mode. The meeting passed the Ministerial Declaration, expounding the principled stand on international development cooperation agenda.
