Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Comment on Japan's Otawara City's Selection of New Textbook for High Schools
2005/07/15

Q: It is reported that, on July 12th, the municipal government of Otawara in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture determined to use the new history textbooks compiled by the Japanese rightist group for junior high school students. What comment does China have on this report?

A: The history textbooks compiled by the Japanese rightist group have made the utmost efforts to whitewash and evade Japan's due political and moral responsibility for its aggression war, and even worse, attempt in vain to overturn its aggression history. Should such textbooks enter the classroom, they will inevitably gravely mislead and poison the Japanese young people.

It must be pointed out that, the Japanese Government shoulders an unshirkable responsibility in this regard. The Japanese side should earnestly take a highly responsible attitude towards history and the future and educate the young generation with a correct outlook on history. This will help improve Japan's international image and its relations with Asian neighboring countries and serve Japan's own interests as well.
