Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang Takes Question from the Press
2005/04/11

Q: The Japanese Embassy in China was attacked by some protestors and suffered losses, and the Japanese Foreign Minister requested the Chinese side to make an apology and compensation. What comment does China have?

A: During the recent protest and demonstration against Japan in Beijing, the Chinese government has all long required the demonstrators to express their attitude in a calm, rational and orderly manner in accordance with the law. The relevant authorities have done a lot in this regard to ensure the security of Japanese institutes and citizens in China. As for a few excessive behaviors in the demonstration process, that is not what we wish to see.

It must be pointed out that the Chinese side should not be held responsible for the nowadays situation of China-Japan relations. The Japanese side must seriously take and properly handle the history of Japanese aggression against China and other major issues of principle bearing on the feelings of the Chinese people. It should do more to enhance mutual trust and safeguard the overall interests of China-Japan relations, instead of doing the contraries.
