Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on the New Draft Platform of the US Republican Party
2004/08/30

Q: According to Taiwan's media, the US Republican Party alleged in its new draft platform that China was a strategic competitor rather than a strategic partner of the United States. The US agrees to the view of "there is but one China." But it will assist Taiwan in its self-defense. What comment do you have on this?

A: I have taken note of the reports and express our grave concern.

To properly handle the Taiwan question is essential to the development of China-US constructive and cooperative relations. The three Sino-US joint communiqués are the political foundation of China-US relations. The one-China policy has been held as a consensus between the US Republican Party and the Democratic Party as well as a commitment made by the successive US Administrations since our two countries established diplomatic ties. China is firmly opposed to any remarks or actions that violate the principles in the three joint communiqués.
