Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Remarks on the "Emergency Landing" in Japan of Taiwan's "Premier"
2004/08/26

Q: It is reported by the Japanese media that Taiwans "Premier" Yu Shyi-kun's plane, during the flight from the US to Taipei on 20 August, was "forced to land" at the Naha Airport in Japan due to typhoon. What comment does China have on this?

A: China's position on the Taiwan question is clear. We are firmly opposed to the political activities of the Taiwan authorities' leaders in countries that have diplomatic relations with China, whatever pretext they may take. The Chinese side has expressed to Japan our grave concern and required it to properly handle the issue strictly in line with the relevant principles of the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and its commitments on the Taiwan question.
